My Story

Thad is an experienced attorney who’s made a real impact in patent law, privacy, and cybersecurity. He’s spent years helping tech companies figure out their patent strategies, manage portfolios, and handle everything from prosecution to litigation. Whether it’s licensing, negotiating deals, or steering teams through complicated patent disputes, Thad’s known for finding smart and practical solutions that actually work for businesses.

He also has a knack for deciding which inventions merit patent filings, determining which patent filings should be disclosed to standards organizations such as ETSI, and ensuring those filings help companies maintain their competitive advantage. Thad has worked on mergers, acquisitions, and tech transfers—always focused on making the most out of business opportunities while keeping intellectual property secure. He’s used to collaborating with engineers and business leaders to make sure legal strategies fit both technical realities and company goals.

On the privacy side, Thad has helped build and roll out privacy frameworks and AI governance programs, especially for cloud products. He knows what it takes to keep data protected and ensure everything is up to code with major privacy laws like GDPR and other compliance requirements such as those associated with the EU Data Act. Thad guides teams through privacy-by-design processes, making sure privacy is considered from the start. He has also written data protection agreements and educated business leaders on privacy risk.

For cybersecurity, Thad is right at home working with tech and legal teams to handle product security and vulnerability disclosure requirements. He’s steered clients through compliance checks, security certifications, and tough regulatory demands. When it comes to security vendor agreements and risk management, Thad helps tech products launch successfully, keeping security and business priorities in sync.

Thad’s combination of patent, privacy, and cybersecurity experience means he is able to look at legal challenges from every angle and create well-rounded solutions that help businesses stay protected and prepared for whatever comes next.

Thad is married to Caroline, whom he met during a co-op stint at IBM back when they were undergrads. It only took them 26 years to tie the knot after that—but that’s definitely a story for another time (and possibly a therapist). Together, they share their home with Rosie, who is scientifically proven to be the world’s sweetest dog (seriously, there’s data).

When he’s not lawyering, Thad can occasionally be found on ski slopes pretending he’s not terrified of moguls. He’s also a fair-weather motorcycle rider, which is code for “only when it’s sunny and warm and the roads are perfect.” Lately, he’s developed a new hobby: crashing drones. He’s gotten quite good at it, actually—mastering the art of unplanned landings with impressive consistency. With enough practice, he might even figure out how to keep them in the air. He also dabbles in software development and is currently experimenting with agentic AI, which hopefully goes better than the drone situation.
